I did my project about the mathematical constant e. e is both an irrational and transcendental number meaning that it cannot be expressed as a fraction and that it is not a root of any non-zero polynomial with rational coefficients. The value of the derivative of the function f(x) = ex (known as the exponential function) at the point x = 0 is 1. Also, the inverse of f(x) = ex is the natural logarithm or simply ln. e is often used in financial math as well as calculations regarding the natural world. However, I choose e to make a piece of music.
I took the first 22 integers of e (2.7182818284590452323502) and applied them to a A minor scale. For example, since the first number of e is 2, the first note of the piece is the 2nd interval of A minor, B. Because, both the piece begins and ends on a B, it actually sounds like it's in the Dorian mode. Anyway, the result was cute little melody. I also tried taking the musical inverse of the melody which would be the musical equivalent of ln and adding it into the melody, but the result was disturbingly ugly sounding. I was unable to upload the actual finale file to my blog so I'll bring it on a jump drive Wednesday.
